Add butter
It's a whole new timeline.
After Effects alternative
Motion graphics and video ads with After Effects-level range — easing, 3D, shaders, kinetic type — in a browser editor you don't have to spend a year learning. Switch to Butter if you're a designer or marketer who needs motion graphics for social, product and ad work and has been avoiding After Effects — or buying templates you then can't edit. Stay with After Effects if you do compositing, VFX, character animation or broadcast work; nothing in a browser replaces it for that, and this page won't pretend otherwise.
TL;DR
Choose Butter if you make motion graphics for ads, social and product promos; you want real easing, 3D and shader effects without learning keyframes; and you need the same piece in every aspect ratio without rebuilding it.
Stay with After Effects if your work is compositing, tracking, rotoscoping, character rigs or anything that leans on Trapcode, Element 3D and the plugin ecosystem. After Effects has no ceiling; Butter has a very high one.
Butter vs After Effects at a glance
| Feature | After Effects | Butter |
|---|---|---|
| Learning curve | Adobe's own forum experts estimate 20–100 hours to get efficient | Open a template, change it; keyframes available but not required |
| Runs on | Desktop app; wants a powerful machine, lots of RAM and cache storage | Browser; no install, no GPU requirement |
| Preview and render | Pre-renders previews after edits; export through Media Encoder | Real-time in the browser; export when you're done |
| Easing and keyframes | Full graph editor | Easing curves and keyframes on every layer |
| 3D | Classic 3D + Cinema 4D renderer; Element 3D via plugin | Native 3D blocks: mockups, extruded logos, product spins |
| Shaders and effects | Via plugins (Trapcode, Sapphire, etc.) | Native shader blocks; code your own |
| Templates | MOGRT/Envato templates that still require After Effects to edit | templates recreated from real ad campaigns, editable in place |
| Figma | Export frames, rebuild layers in AE (or a paid plugin) | Figma plugin imports designs as layers |
| Change one element | Open the project, find the layer, re-render preview | Click it, change it |
| Resize to every format | Rebuild or duplicate comps per aspect ratio | One-click 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 variants |
| Brand kit | Manual, or Essential Graphics setup | Brand kit swaps fonts, colors and logos across a project |
| AI | Firefly features; AE agent announced for editable rigs | Optional: generate as editable layers from Butter or ChatGPT; editing costs no credits |
| Compositing / VFX | Industry standard | Not the job |
| Free plan | 7-day trial | Free plan |
| Pricing from | $22.99/mo (single app, annual billed monthly); All Apps $69.99/mo | Basic: $18/mo billed annually ($25 monthly) |
| Best for | Motion designers, VFX, broadcast, film | Designers and marketers making motion graphics for ads and social |
| Start from a finished file | Needs the .aep; a rendered MP4 is pixels — Adobe's forums tell you to cover the old text or find the project | Import the rendered MP4, a static or a screenshot; Butter rebuilds it as layers — text, logo, product, background — on a timeline. The rebuild is AI, so it uses credits; editing the result is free |
| Reusable pieces | Precomps and Essential Graphics, inside one project | Blocks: save any element — generated or built — and reuse it in the next project; scan a website or video to make blocks from it |
After Effects makes you learn it first. Butter lets you make the thing.
Ask Adobe's own community how long After Effects takes and the answers are twenty to thirty hours just to get comfortable with the interface, and roughly a hundred to become efficient. That's why designers who need motion for social and product work buy templates instead — and then hit the second wall: the Motion Array or Envato template arrives as an After Effects project, the layers are precomped and hidden, the plugin it needs costs more than the template did, and Adobe's experts tell them to take an After Effects 101 course. One editor paid $200 to get a $12 template fixed. Teams that design in Figma hit a third wall: the design exports as flat frames and has to be rebuilt as layers before anything can move.
Butter starts from the other end. Every template is already motion — real easing, kinetic type, 3D mockups, shader backgrounds — built as layers on a timeline in the browser. You open it and change it. Keyframes and easing curves are there when you want them; a code panel is there if you want to write a block yourself; neither is required to ship. Bring a Figma design in through the plugin and it arrives as layers. Bring a flattened PNG, a static ad or the rendered MP4 of a piece whose project is gone, and Butter rebuilds that as layers too. Change one element and nothing re-renders. Need the same piece in 9:16, 1:1 and 4:5? One click, and the layers reflow instead of you rebuilding three comps. It's After Effects-level range for the work designers and marketers do most — without the machine, the render wait, or the year.
Where After Effects wins
After Effects has no ceiling, and if your work needs that, nothing here applies to you. Compositing, motion tracking, rotoscoping, character rigging, particle systems through Trapcode, photoreal 3D through Element 3D or the Cinema 4D renderer, expressions that drive thousands of layers — that's After Effects, and it's why it's the industry standard for broadcast, film and serious motion design. Its plugin ecosystem is two decades deep. Dynamic Link into Premiere makes it the right tool for anyone cutting long-form video. And the template economy, whatever its frustrations, is enormous: if you need a specific look fast and you already know AE, a $12 template is unbeatable. If you're a working motion designer, you already know all this; this page is for the people who've been trying to avoid becoming one.
Pricing: After Effects vs Butter
| Feature | After Effects | Butter |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | 7-day trial | Free plan |
| Entry paid plan | $22.99/mo single app (annual, billed monthly); Creative Cloud All Apps $69.99/mo ($34.99/mo intro for new subscribers) | Basic: $18/mo billed annually ($25 monthly) |
| What revisions cost | Your time, a re-render, and often a plugin | AI only — generating, or rebuilding what you import. Editing in the editor (move, delete, retype, retime, resize) is free. |
After Effects pricing is per person and annual by default; a template that needs a plugin adds $50–$200 per seat. Templates and blocks are included.
Switching from After Effects to Butter
There's no importer for After Effects projects (.aep) or MOGRT files, and this page says so. What moves is the design, the assets — and the render: a finished MP4 can be rebuilt as layers.
- Bring the assets — or the finished video. Export fonts, logos, colors, footage and stills; load them into a Butter brand kit. If all you have is the rendered MP4 (the client's old ad, a template preview, a piece whose .aep is lost), import that: Butter rebuilds the text, logo, product and background as separate layers so you can change one word instead of cloning it out. If the design lives in Figma, bring it in through the Figma plugin as layers. AE comps, MOGRTs and plugin effects themselves stay in After Effects.
- Start from a template that matches the piece. Pick the closest of Butter's real-campaign templates — product promo, kinetic type, logo reveal, 3D mockup — and swap in your assets. Or describe it in Butter or ChatGPT and get it back as editable layers.
- Edit, resize, export. Adjust easing, timing and layers directly; apply the brand kit; click once for every placement size; export MP4.
Other After Effects alternatives
Ranked for designers doing motion graphics for ads and social:
- Jitter — the best-known free, web-based After Effects alternative, especially for UI animation straight from Figma; beats Butter on brand recognition and Figma-native workflow. 2D only (3D is on its roadmap), fewer templates, not built for footage or ads.
- Lottielab — best if your output is Lottie for product UI; beats Butter on developer handoff. Not a video or ad tool.
- DaVinci Resolve (Fusion) — free, node-based compositing inside a full NLE; the real "free After Effects alternative" for editors and VFX. Beats Butter outright on compositing; steeper curve than AE itself.
- Canva — best if the team already lives there and the motion is simple; beats Butter on ubiquity. Animation is preset-based — no easing curves, no timeline-level control, no 3D.
