HeyGen alternative

Butter is for people who make motion graphics and are tired of being charged to fix them. If your HeyGen bill is going to regeneration rather than new videos, it's time to switch to Butter for your product ads, promos, and motion graphics.

TL;DR

Choose Butter if you make ads and promos from product shots, text and motion graphics; you change copy, prices and sizes constantly; and you want to fix one element without paying for a new render.

Stay with HeyGen if you need AI avatars, lip-synced spokespeople, voice cloning, or one video translated into many languages. Those are HeyGen's core and Butter has no equivalent.

Product ads, promos, motion graphics for paid social

Start from what you already have

Upload footage and images as clips; a finished ad stays a finished ad

Drop in a static ad, a screenshot, an MP4 or a URL and it comes back as separate layers — text, logo, product, background — you can change. The rebuild is AI, so it uses credits; editing the result is free

Website to video

Website-to-video workflows capture site content and branding; HyperFrames can generate motion graphics from a URL

Paste the URL; Butter pulls the logo, fonts, colors, screenshots and copy and builds the ad as layers you can edit

Recreate a reference ad

Video Agent accepts reference images and videos to guide generation

Give it a competitor's or reference ad; Butter breaks it down and rebuilds it with your brand ("Reference → brand" workflow)

Reusable pieces

Avatar and scene templates

Save any generated element as a block and reuse it in the next project; scan a website or video to make blocks from it

HeyGen charges for edits. Butter does not.

HeyGen's own agent page says every motion element stays editable after generation and that you can "refine through conversation." In practice, HeyGen's users describe the same loop on G2: a small change to the script means resubmitting the video; a voice tweak costs dozens of credits; captions lock once the video is generated; a Video Agent asked for a 60-second video returns eight seconds and ignores movement instructions; and when the agent fails, the attempt is still billed. Several reviewers say they finish image overlays and graphics in a different program entirely, and one describes the charts it produced as crooked.

Butter starts from the opposite assumption. Whatever you generate — from a prompt in Butter or from ChatGPT — arrives as layers on a timeline: the product shot, the headline, the price, the chart, the logo reveal. So does whatever you bring: a static ad, a screenshot, a finished MP4 or your product page URL comes back the same way, as layers, not as a clip. Changing the price is clicking the price. Moving the overlay is dragging it. Swapping the aspect ratio is one click, and the layers reflow. None of that is a regeneration, so none of it costs credits. You only spend when you ask the AI to make something — a new ad, or the rebuild of one you brought in.

Where HeyGen wins

HeyGen is the better tool when the person on screen is the product. Its avatars, lip-sync and voice cloning are the best in the category, and its translation pipeline turns one video into thirty languages with matched lip movement — Butter has nothing comparable and isn't trying. HeyGen also exports up to 4K on Pro and handles 30-minute videos; if you make long training or onboarding content, that's HeyGen's lane. Its API and Video Agent are mature, and its free plan is a fast way to test an avatar concept. If your ad needs a face that talks, start there.

What revisions cost

Credits; HeyGen says usage varies by model, duration and complexity and publishes no per-edit rate

AI only — generating, or rebuilding what you import. Editing in the editor (move, delete, retype, retime, resize) is free.

HeyGen's Pro ($49, 1,000 credits) and Business ($149 + $20/seat) tiers scale on credits, so cost tracks how often you regenerate. Butter's cost tracks how often you create something new.

Switching from HeyGen to Butter

  1. Bring what you have — including the finished ads. Upload the product shots, logo, fonts and voiceover files you used in HeyGen. A finished HeyGen export (MP4) or a static ad can go in too: Butter rebuilds it as separate layers — the text, the product shot, the background — so you can change the copy instead of regenerating. Avatars and cloned voices don't transfer — nothing can rebuild those — so plan on text, product and motion-led ads.
  2. Start from a matching template, or from your own website. Pick a promo or product-ad template from the template library, paste your product page URL and let Butter pull the brand and build the ad, or describe the ad in Butter or ChatGPT; it's built as editable layers every way.
  3. Edit, resize, export. Change copy and prices directly, apply your brand kit, click once for every placement size, export without a watermark on paid plans.

Other HeyGen alternatives

Ranked for the ad-and-promo job:

  1. Synthesia — best for corporate training and avatars with enterprise controls; beats Butter on avatars outright. Not built for ads.
  2. InVideo AI — best if you want a prompt-to-video tool that keeps a multitrack timeline for footage; beats Butter on stock-footage libraries and long-form. Weak on motion graphics and design control.
  3. Creatify — best for UGC-style and avatar ads at volume; beats Butter on AI actors. Reviewers report whole-scene regeneration for small edits.
  4. Canva — best if your team already lives there and the ads are simple; beats Butter on ubiquity and price. Animation is preset-based, no real timeline control.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Butter has a free plan and paid plans from $18/mo billed annually ($25 monthly). The difference that matters for cost is that Butter charges credits only for AI — generating an ad, or rebuilding one you import — and never for editing in the editor, so a video you keep revising doesn't keep costing you.
